Removing Moisture From Materials

8/7/2023 (Permalink)

When our crew approaches a water job, we evaluate many different variables. All of which are very important, but there are two variables that we look at the most: type of material and the degree of wetness. This means that we will evaluate each material's permeability, the ability for water to pass through the material, dampness, the moisture movement. The liquids will be presented in one of these forms.

Surface Water

Like the name, you can find this type of moisture on the material's surface. It is a visible liquid and can evaporate. When mitigating this type of moisture, you must remove the moisture using mechanical extraction. The next component needed to be addressed: airflow, which helps control temperature and humidity, which helps evaporate any remaining moisture.

Free Water

Unlike surface water, the name of this absorption doesn't give you many clues on how to find it in a material. Before the moisture can form a chemical bond to the material, free water happens. You can find this type of moisture in cavities, open pores, and other air spaces within the material. When mitigating this form of moisture, you will want to use lower humidities and warmer temperatures. By maintaining these factors, you ensure that the moisture is going to evaporate.

Bound Water

More work is needed to fully mitigate this type of moisture material as this form is when the moisture has made chemical bonds. You will have to release it to get the moisture out of the material when this happens. Unlike the other categories, controlling the airflow won't help remove the chemical bonds. The moisture will dry fastest when it is warmed. The essential factor to keep in mind is maintaining the surrounding humidity. Keep in mind that this type will take the longest to dry out of all categories.

This is why you should hire our team of professionals here at SERVPRO of Joliet because we know what to look for. We evaluate each material to create a precious course of action to provide results and restore to the preloss condition.

Clean Water, Gray Water, and Black Water

7/7/2023 (Permalink)

What's the difference between clean water, gray water, and black water? And why are they all bad when it comes to flooding and water damage to an Indianapolis home or business?

What is Clean Water?

Clean water is water that comes from your faucet or shower head that you can drink safely. It is also considered rainwater or snow melt. Water damage to your home can come from a broken water line, a busted toilet tank, a leaky washer or refrigerator, or rain or snow melt entering your home or basement. While clean water flooding your basement or floors may not cause an immediate health risk, it can quickly evolve into gray water after prolonged contact with building surfaces, materials, and items. This can happen within 48 hours, so it is important to call SERVPRO of Joliet as soon as possible after a flood or water damage.

What is Gray Water?

Gray water is water that may contain chemicals or contaminants that may be harmful to your health. Gray water can come from the shower and sink drains, the washer drains, the dishwasher drain, and aquariums. Gray water can cause even more damage than clean water and evolve into black water within 48 hours, causing further damage and health risks.

What is Black Water?

Black water is contaminated water from floodwaters and sewage waters. Black water can come from a flooded river, a backed-up toilet, or a backed-up sewage line in your home. Black water can contain all types of harmful contaminants like bacteria, mold, and viruses that can be highly harmful to humans. Black water can cause diseases and illnesses like cholera, hepatitis, and norovirus. Black water can be hazardous to one's health, and it is imperative to immediately call a professional cleanup team like SERVPRO of Joliet. If the water damage from black water isn't professionally removed, dried out, and cleaned, infections and illnesses can occur from microbes in the air and dust. You must hire professionals with the right tools and processes to ensure a thorough cleanup.

Time is Not on Your Side

If your home or business suffers water or flooding damage, you need to take immediate steps to dry out the property as quickly as possible. With black water, it is imperative that you call us immediately and not try to clean up the water yourself as this can be very dangerous to your health. Even with gray water, if you are unsure what contaminants may be in the water, it is usually best to rely on professionals, like us, who can test the water, extract the water, and take the appropriate steps to clean the property and ensure there are no health risks from contaminants. Even with clean water, if you do not completely dry the damaged areas, the clean water can quickly turn into gray water, which can turn into black water.

At SERVPRO of Joliet, we have extensive experience with water and flood damage in homes and businesses in the Indianapolis area. We have the professional equipment, tools, cleaning solutions, and expertise to properly extract the water, dry the property, and make it "Like it never even happened."

3 Types of Water Damages

1/5/2023 (Permalink)

THERE ARE 3 BASIC CATEGORIES OF WATER Category 1: Clean water originates from a sanitary source such as a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean and poses no substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure. However, it may not always remain clean after it meets other surfaces or materials. Category 2: Gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans. It may contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter (chemical or biological). Category 3: Black water is highly contaminated and filled with pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Such water sources may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, regulated materials, or toxic organic substances. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster; Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

THE 4 PRIMARY CLASSIFICATIONS OF WATER DAMAGE

  • Class 1 is the least amount of water, absorption and evaporation. It affects only part of a room or area, or larger areas containing materials that have absorbed minimal moisture. Little or no wet carpet and/or cushion is present.
  • Class 2 involves a large amount of water, absorption and evaporation. It affects at least an entire room of carpet and cushion (pad). Water has wicked up walls less than 24 inches. There is moisture remaining in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 involves the greatest amount of water, absorption and evaporation. Water may have come from overhead.  Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushions and subfloor in virtually all the entire area is saturated.
  • Class 4 relates to specialty drying situations. Wet materials with very low permeance/porosity (eg. hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, light-weight concrete and stone). Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity. These types of losses may require longer drying times and special methods.

We have the knowledge, experience and proper equipment to locate any hidden moisture lurking out of sight and clean up water damage of any size and get it done right the first time.

Moisture sensors, which are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls. We have moisture meters that we use to test the actual moisture content of materials. The meters allow our technicians to accurately monitor the drying process. Our team also has thermohygrometers on hand to measure temperature and relative humidity, which ensures techs can calculate and create an environment that is most conducive to drying.

Water Damage After A Snow Storm

12/4/2022 (Permalink)

Snow storms are exciting! Snowmen, sledding, hot chocolate and snow days from work and school are the fun parts of winter storms in Illinois. Unfortunately, severe weather can leave costly and frustrating damage to your home.

The most common causes of property damage to your home caused by winter weather are roof damage caused by heavy snow and ice and flooding caused by burst pipes and "ice dams".  Ice dams are ridges that build up on the edge of your roof that prevent melting water from running off. The water will then find cracks and openings on the roof to enter the attic space and interior of the home. Even with proper maintenance, your home is vulnerable to these situations when snow falls heavily and temperatures drop.

If your home has been damaged by severe winter weather, trust the restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Joliet. We will be on site quickly to assess the damage and make a plan to make your home "Like it never even happened." Reach us anytime day or night at 815-436-5735.

5 Things to Know About Water Damage

10/17/2022 (Permalink)

As a homeowner, you need to make sure that you're prepared to protect your Joliet, I, home from peril. Water damage can manifest itself in all sorts of ways, whether it's from excessive rainfall, a pipe burst or toilet overflow. Arm yourself with knowledge and study the following tips regarding residential water damage.

1. Call Your Insurance Company Immediately.
If you discover flooding or another type of water damage, you need to contact your insurance company immediately. Your insurance agent can file a claim much more quickly, as well as walk you through the initial damage remediation steps.

2. There's No Time to Waste.
Remediating water damage is all about efficiency. Once the initial accident occurs, it's a race against the clock to see how quickly you can resolve the situation. Secondary damage, such as mold growth, only requires 24 hours to set in.

3. Flood Water Comes in 3 Different Categories.
Flood water is categorized based upon the types of contaminants present. Category 3, also known as black water, poses a significant health hazard and must be handled much more carefully than Category 1, which originates from your water line. Black water floods are also capable of inflicting significantly more damage.

4. Flood Damage and Water Damage Are Not the Same.
Your insurance company treats each disaster differently, depending on the source of the damage. Damage caused by a pipe burst, or other internal accident, is considered water damage. Damage that resulted from a nearby body of water that overflowed onto your property is considered flood damage.

5. Flood Damage is Not Covered by Homeowner's Insurance.
If you live in an area that is more susceptible to flooding, then it's a good idea to purchase a separate flood insurance policy. You also should sit down with your insurance agent to discuss exactly which scenarios your current homeowner's insurance policy actually does cover.
There are steps you can take to help deter water damage, but there's no way to guarantee absolute immunity. If your property has recently suffered a pipe burst, severe flood or other type of water damage, make sure to contact storm remediation experts as soon as possible.

Does Renter Insurance Cover Water Damage

7/7/2022 (Permalink)

If you are renting a house or apartment in Joliet, IL, you have probably purchased renter's insurance to cover your belongings in the event of a disaster. You might be wondering, though, how far your coverage extends. Renters should be aware that most policies do not protect a tenant's belongings in the event of a flood.

What Is Covered by Insurance for Renters?

A regular policy for renters will cover your items if something happens to your belongings, including water damage from a burst pipe, certain plumbing issues or a broken appliance. However, a basic policy will not cover damage from flooding. Flooding can be caused by:

  • Heavy rain
  • Too much snow
  • Rising water
  • Sewage backup

Renters will need to purchase a separate flood insurance policy for these types of disasters.

Do I Need Flood Insurance?
If you do not live near the coast or in a flood plain, it's easy to dismiss the idea of purchasing flood insurance coverage. However, even a minor flood can be expensive. FEMA estimates that even one inch of water can do thousands of dollars in damage to the contents of a dwelling. Flood insurance will help pay if you need to replace your belongings or use a commercial restoration service. Flooding can happen in any of the 50 states. If you want guidance determining your risk level for flooding, consult FEMA's flood map service to see what zone you live in.

How Can I Purchase Flood Insurance?
The National Flood Insurance Program, or NFIP, is a division of FEMA that provides flood insurance in the United States. The insurance is sold through private companies. Because prices are set by the government, they are consistent no matter what company offers it. Prices will depend on what kind of dwelling you live in and your geographic location. Ask your insurance company if it sells flood insurance.
If you want complete protection for your belongings, make sure your renter's insurance policy is up to date and consider adding flood insurance coverage. You will have peace of mind knowing you're prepared if you need to make a claim.

Flooding

6/25/2022 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.  Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river, or even in the desert-there is always potential for flood damage.  Fema.gov reports in the last 5 years, all 50 states have experiences floods or flash floods.  Just because you haven't experiences a flood in the past does not mean you won't in the future.  In fact, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas, and even just one inch of flood damage in an average home can cost you up to $27,000.

If you experience flooding call the experts at SERVPRO of Joliet and we will make it "Like it never even happened."

Essential Things to Note About Water Mitigation for Electronics

6/17/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Joliet Uses Simple and Advanced Approaches in Joliet Homes to Save Electronics.

Since there are several electronics in a home, water intrusion can impact some if not all of them. An appropriate response helps limit damage or salvage some affected items. Electronics pose many challenges to water restoration, unlike other house items like furniture, which can be readily dried or subjected to rigorous cleaning procedures.

When conducting water mitigation in Illinois households, managing affected electronics depends on how the damage occurs. SERVPRO of Joliet facilitates some of the mitigation processes or involves a specialist to help clean and restore appliances and other electronic items

Water damage can affect electronics through:

  • Direct water contact
  • High indoor humidity
  • Temperature plummeting to the dew point

Water can splash on items or submerge them if placed on the floor. Such direct contact causes significant damage since the water involved is sufficient to reach the internal components of an appliance. Timely intervention can improve the chances of saving such items since significant damage rarely happens immediately on contacting water.

Actions that help electronics exposed to water include:

  • Unplugging all items from power sources
  • Extracting any water inside the items
  • Maintaining temperature above the dew point

SERVPRO of Joliet helps ensure that such actions are taken in good time for effectiveness. For instance, when you call, our customer support staff guide you on the immediate steps you can take to save valued items, including unplugging them from power sources. We can also assist with water removal and temperature regulation on arrival at your property, especially if portable heaters are necessary.

Apart from the damage caused by direct water contact, problems can develop from exposure to humid air due to condensation inside the items. When our SERVPRO technicians set up dehumidifiers in the property during restoration, evaporation from standing water cannot drive humidity to unsafe levels.

SERVPRO of Joliet handles all types of water mitigation. Call us at (815) 436-5735. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

3 Reasons You Might Find Water in Your Crawl Space

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

Three Possible Causes Of Water In Your Crawl Space

A wet crawl space can create more problems than you might expect. It makes water damage less visible, but it also creates the perfect conditions for mold growth. The moisture also weakens the Joliet, IL, house's structural materials, creating greater damage as a result. Learn about the most common causes for water inside the crawl space so you can prevent an incident.

1. Overwatered Plants

You can accidentally flood the crawl space by doing something as simple as overwatering plants, especially those close to the house's foundation. Whether you use too much water or leave the hose or sprinkler running beyond the necessary time, the excess will seep into the house and reach the lower sections first. You can easily turn off the water to resolve this issue. You can spot this problem if you see water pooling near the affected area.

2. Poor Sloping Grade

Another factor that can result in a wet crawl space is the lack of proper grading around your house. Ideally, you want the grading to slope away from the building and towards the outer yard or the streets. This feature ensures that any incoming water flows away from the foundation, preventing flooding. Check the grade after winter, intense rainfall or an overwatering incident. If the slope is altered or missing, build it up between six to eight inches away from home.

3. Defective Plumbing

Another reason why you might find water inside your crawl space involves defective or broken pipes. Even if the leak or burst pipe is in the house's upper floors, the water will always trickle down. If you find water in the crawl space or lower area, conduct a detailed search to find the source and fix it. Hire a plumber if you are unable to find it.

You should deal with a wet crawl space fast before mold growth and water damage threatens your home. Identify these occurrences to avoid this situation and contact emergency remediation services if you find water in that area or anywhere else.

Did you know that SERVPRO also cleans up sewage backups?

Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. SERVPRO of Joliet technicians will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

However, these tools are not able to measure up to the industrial-strength equipment and training that skilled water restoration technicians (WRT) bring to the job site. Our team is fully trained through the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). We work to ensure we meet or exceed all of the expectations for water cleanup, so that your home is restored to make it “Like it never even happened.”

What Happens During Water Damage Restoration?

Water migration is a critical concern that our team has once we arrive on the scene. We must spring into action as quickly as possible to keep water from moving into other areas of the home. Our technicians wear removable shoe covers while we work through each area of the home to limit damage from spreading. Moisture detection tools that do not penetrate materials are also available to the team that allows us to take moisture readings without causing further damage.

How Fast Will the Water Removal Process Be?

SERVPRO technicians follow distinct steps to expedite the water damage restoration process, including:

    •    Assessment
    •    Movement of Contents
    •    Water Removal
    •    Moisture Control
    •    Water Detection

After we assess the site of the loss, our team formulates a plan involving the best equipment and techniques to get the job done. Just a sampling of the equipment that our vehicles are equipped with to address water restoration projects include:

    •    Water Extraction Tools: We have truck-mounted extractors that allow us to remove hundreds to thousands of gallons of water in a short span. Submersible pumps are also available to facilitate targeted water removal.
    •    Air Movers: Industrial fans and high-speed air movers help improve airflow over the flooring, carpets furnishings, and walls to make moisture evaporation go faster.
    •    Dehumidifiers: Dehumidification is critical with any water cleanup project. Our technicians have industrial-grade dehumidifiers that lower humidity levels within the home. This equipment removes damp air from the space and prevents secondary water damage like swelling or warping of walls, flooring, and furniture.
    •    Moisture Detectors: No moisture must be left behind, so our team has access to a range of moisture detection tools. Moisture meters, moisture sensors, and thermal imaging cameras help us to located hidden moisture pockets in cracks and crevices. Failing to find leftover moisture zones can cause hidden damage due to harmful mold and mildew growth.

Why is Water Migration Something to Worry About?
All standing water within the loss zone must be entirely removed before the drying process begins. If there is any moisture left behind in the walls or behind baseboards, it can destroy the building materials or turn into a breeding ground for bacteria and microbes. In a situation where moisture lurks behind walls, our technicians may need to drill holes in the walls to bring warm air in, which facilitates better drying.

SERVPRO is Here for Effective Water Restoration When You Need It

When we are called for water cleanup, there is more to the job than taking care of visible water. Moisture migrates to dry spaces, which means that your carpets and padding, floors and subfloors, drywall and studs are all prone to damage. Even if it seems as though your floor may be dry after extraction, there could still be hidden moisture found in the subfloor below. This is why we have professional equipment allowing us to detect and measure the moisture levels throughout your home.

Once the water cleanup and drying are complete, our trucks are loaded with a full range of antibacterial agents, cleaning projects, and deodorizers to ensure your home is ready for you to resume your daily life. Our cleaning technicians work closely with our other restoration team members to ensure your project moves along cost-effectively and efficiently.

Never let a water loss situation create stress in your life. SERVPRO of Joliet is available 24/7 for emergency service when you need professional water cleanup. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster, and you can reach us by calling (815) 436-5735 so that a team can be deployed to begin an assessment.

Leaking Appliances?

2/7/2022 (Permalink)

Coming home to a puddle on the floor under one of your household appliances is a cause for concern that warrants investigation. After all, a leaking appliance can cause some serious water damage that affects the structural integrity of your home and can cost thousands of dollars if it isn’t caught and cleaned up in time.

So, what should you do when you discover that your fridge, freezer, or washing machine is leaking? We recommend taking the following steps.

Is Your Appliance Level?

If your appliance isn’t gushing water and the puddle is small, take measures to clean up the water and double-check that your fridge or freezer is level. If your appliance isn’t set on level ground, there’s a good chance that it may be leaking since the water source is off-kilter. Especially if the appliance is new, your floors have recently been remodeled, or you moved your appliance recently, an appliance that is not sitting level may be the reason behind your leak.

How Can I Stop The Water Leak From Getting Worse?

Whenever water is gushing out of an appliance or you discover an obviously long-standing leak that hasn’t been tended to, the first step you should take is to turn off your water main. Having water actively run to your appliance is probably making the leak even worse, which is why water is pouring out of it in the first place. Once your water main is off, you can hopefully spot where the leak is coming from.

What Can I Do To Clean Up After A Water Leak?

Use towels and any mops that you have to clean up excess water that is pooled on your floor. This allows you to mitigate further damage and assess the existing damage. Do you see:

  • Mold
  • Warping
  • Stains
  • Discoloration

Anything that has tears, holes, shows signs of mold or is obviously completely soaked and unlikely to dry soon should be looked at by a professional.

How Can The Professionals Help?

Water damage left untreated can wreak havoc on your home, which is why a leaking appliance should always be checked out and taken care of so the leak is identified and permanently resolved. A basement can flood at any time, but flooding often happens during heavy rainfall. And in our area we get plenty of rain during our spring storm season. Basements are prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a house and are built below ground level. Water runs from high to low ground and unfortunately straight into your basement. Excessive rain in a short period of time can saturate the earth around your basement and push through foundation cracks. THIS is when you call SERVPRO of Joliet. 815-436-5735. We can answer any questions you have and get our highly trained technicians out to you right away!

How To Use IICRC Classifications To Assess Flood Damage

4/28/2021 (Permalink)

If you have endured flood damage to your Joliet home – SERVPRO can help you. We are an experienced flood damage restoration and repair team, with access to sophisticated tools and the finest equipment. If your property needs saving, we are the right choice. The first that thing we do, once we arrive on site, is to conduct a full inspection. This is designed to help us determine the extent and nature of the damage. The IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) categories flood damage according to four key classifications. The SERVPRO technicians will use this guide to shape their plan of action and decide which repairs are required.

Here is some more information on the IICRC classifications and what they might mean for your property.

Class One: Limited Intrusion
This is the least severe type of flood damage. A small amount of water has entered the home. There is minimal damage to walls and soft furnishings. Depending on the size, shape, and location of the affected space, large fans can likely be used to dry it out.

Class Two: Intrusion With Some Spread
Here, flood water has started to spread. If your house was impacted by a storm, the damage is almost going to have advanced beyond small pools of water. It may have risen into the walls and started to soak into timber, concrete, and insulation materials. The water has reached the subflooring beneath carpets. Industrial drying machines (and carpet lifters) will be brought in to absorb the excess moisture.

Class Three: Invasive Liquid
The walls, ceilings, soft furnishings, and floors are all damp and need to be dried quickly. Most are fully saturated with water. Water lines on the walls extend more than two feet above the floor. This tends to occur when ceilings leak (during heavy rainfall), and water seeps through the walls. Dehumidifiers and dryers can be used to restore the home, but some materials may be unsalvageable.

Class Four: Severe Invasion
In the most severe cases, objects not usually affected by flooding have been compromised. For instance, paintings high up on walls, attics (if the danger is from natural flooding), and crawlspaces. At SERVPRO, we’re committed to saving as many of your possessions as possible, but extensive damage can render some items irreparable. We will, however, inform you of the fact before disposing of any materials. Serious flood damage may require you to move out of the property while we secure its structural safety and install heavy duty drying machines.

Whether your home has been damaged by a storm or by something more familiar, like a burst pipe, assessing the damage is an important part of formulating a response. SERVPRO of Joliet is a locally based service, which means that our response is always fast.

Signs That You May Have Hidden Water Damage in Your Home

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

Identifying signs of water damage to your home sooner rather than later can make a difference in lessening the damage and the costs to repair and restore your home back to normal. SERVPRO technicians are ready 24/7 to respond quickly to floods, burst pipes, and other mishaps, saving time and money by getting to the job site faster. By identifying and treating problems earlier, we can help to prevent situations such as mold growth and severe oxidation from causing damage to the structural components of your home. Here are a few signs that may indicate water damage in your home.

Discolored materials

Many materials common in homes show water damage through discoloration. Pigments used in fabrics, paints, flooring, ceilings, and other surfaces can change color when they come in contact with water. The shape, spread, and specific color of these spots can vary depending on how much water has been released, and what materials it has already come in contact with. One of the most destructive processes in a water-damaged home is color bleed from one fabric to another, but a call to SERVPRO can help to avoid color bleeding by addressing issues as quickly as possible.

Unusual or musty odors

Several complications of water damage can create unusual and off-putting odors, sometimes very soon after the damaging water incident happens. Oxidizing metals, freshly soaked wood, and other materials, and long-term mold growth can all create unique and pungent odors in your home. While smells can be useful to identify a problem, you don’t want them around forever! That’s why SERVPRO technicians use multiple deodorization methods to rid your home of any unwanted smells. If you notice an unusual smell in your home, call the pros to get the problem handled quickly!

Dripping or other water sounds

Unusual sounds behind walls and below floors could be indicative of a water leak or other plumbing issue in your home. Drips may be obvious when you hear them but be alert for other unusual sounds as well. Water at high pressure inside pipes in your home can create unique sounds when something is amiss. It might be a whooshing sound or even a hum. If you hear anything unusual behind those walls, give us a call!

SERVPRO of Joliet helps homeowners who experience water leaks, floods, and other disasters in their residences, helping get their homes back to normal. Call us at 815-436-5735 if you experience water damage of any kind.

5 Things You Need to Know About Water Damage

1/25/2021 (Permalink)

Sink Overflow Damage

10/6/2020 (Permalink)

Overflow Cleaning Procedure:

  1. Mop up as much water as possible from floors, pantries, and cabinets.
  2. Leave cabinets and doors open so that all dampened areas have a chance to dry out.
  3. To more thoroughly dry out the area, use cross-ventilating electric fans.
  4. Thoroughly clean all surfaces with antibacterial cleaner.

Sink Overflow Prevention Tips

We can avoid the hassle of a sink overflow by being proactive to keep drain clogs from happening in the first place. Drains are not built to handle everything that winds up in the sink, so grating the drain is the best way to avoid these issues

  • Food - Minimal food should end up in the sink. Throw food scraps into the trash and use a sink strainer to catch food particles that end up in the sink. Coffee grounds, pasta, rice, and fibrous foods are common culprits for clogging drains, so keep them out of the sink as best you can. Use a strainer and empty it regularly to keep the sink clean and clear.
  • Grease - Hot grease looks clear and fluid like water, but when it cools it becomes gummy. Fatty grease and oil will build up along the sides of plumbing and create stubborn clogs.
  • Hair - Loose hair clogs up a vacuum cleaner hose and it will do the same to your drain. Bathroom sinks are especially susceptible to hair clogs because it’s a place for personal grooming. Use a cover that collects the hair but still lets the water through the drain. This way you can swiftly toss the hair collection into the trash instead of having to fish it out of the drain.

Sink strainers can also catch things you don’t want to get into the drain like expensive rings, fallen eye contacts, and small toys. These sink accessories are typically inexpensive and are found in stores everywhere.

Will Your Insurance Rates Increase After Filing a Claim?

6/4/2020 (Permalink)

A businessman pressing an Insurance Claim button on a transparent screen. Insurance claims are part of your agreement with your provider

An insurance claim can help you pay for the cost of cleanup and restoration services after a home flood or similar disaster. Yet you may have also heard that filing a claim can cause your insurance rates to increase. Read on for more information.

What Are Insurance Claims?

Insurance claims are part of your agreement with your provider. In exchange for a regular fee, also called a premium, the insurer will cover the expenses that result from:

  • Damage
  • Loss
  • An emergency

What Can Cause Your Rates To Increase?
Some factors that affect your insurance rates are beyond your control. For instance, if you live in an area that is prone to floods and hurricanes, you may have to pay higher premiums than those who live in drier climates do.
When you file your insurance claim, the provider will also determine the cause of the damage. If the disaster was ultimately your fault, your rates will likely increase.
Certain losses, such as water damage, are often red flags to insurers. Even if you did not cause the harm, your rate could still go up by 20 to 40 percent. Depending on your provider, the increase could stay in effect for years.

When Should You File a Claim?
You should avoid filing too many water claims. That’s because insurers will look at how many claims you file. If you file numerous claims in a short amount of time, the insurance provider could hike your premiums or cancel your policy completely.
Since making a claim can increase your rates even if the damage was not your fault, you may want to pay for minor floods or leaks on your own. Save the insurance claims for major water disasters.
An insurance claim may greatly reduce your out-of-pocket costs following a home disaster. Yet your premiums could also increase, especially if the flood was your fault. For more information, contact your specific insurance provider in New Lenox, IL.

Is Your Business Covered for Water Damage?

5/11/2020 (Permalink)

Broken water pipe in a building Commercial water damage in Romeoville, IL

Water damage to your Romeoville, IL, property means much more than potentially costly repairs. It can also mean loss of vital equipment, materials, and other belongs, as well as extensive downtime while water and mold remediation and restoration professionals get your business back to normal. Even if it might seem that facing water damage is a rare risk your business faces, ensuring your business insurance include water damage can save big headaches and bills if the “what-if” happens.

Damage Sources

When it comes to the reasons for water issues, there are three main culprits:

Broken Pipes: A frozen pipe can crack and burst, dumping massive amounts of water into a business. Even if there is no visible damage, the right conditions can result in an unexpected pipe break.
Slow Leaks: Usually plumbing or equipment related, gradual leaks can lead to big problems. Sometimes the leaks are hidden, such as if from underground or behind-the-wall plumping, but some leaks can be detected. Not regularly maintaining and inspect HVAC systems, fire sprinklers, toilets, and faucets may turn a slow leak into extensive mold and water damage.
Nature: Heavy rainfall and melting snow can wreak havoc on a property, especially if there are existing foundation issues.

Policy Coverage
The water damage covered by a policy is not always standard. While most allow claims for a pipe burst, damage that could have been prevented is often not covered. In areas prone to natural flooding, an additional policy is required to cover flooding damage. Working with your insurer and understanding the policy is vital to better prepare for the water cleanup process and what it will cost. If a business uses equipment that relies on water, there are often riders or endorsements to increase water damage coverage.
When it comes to water damage, any coverage is better than no coverage. Although not all the repairs may be covered, a little help can still make a big difference in unexpected expenses.

There could be a toilet overflow in there, and chances are, you don’t have any protective gear on arrival at the scene. First, wear rubber boots and gloves then cut off the electricity supply at the main switchboard. That mitigates the risk of electric shock and exposure to black water.

Ignoring Minor Leaks

Postponing broken pipe repairs can be the worst blunder you make as a homeowner. Regardless of how small it might seem, any water leak can spiral into a massive mess with time. The idea is to stay on top of all seepage to avoid mold, mildew, dry rot or something worse. Consider installing spill detection devices that sound an alarm when there is unwanted water in home.

Not Knowing Where to Find the Main Water Valve

There are two essential things every homeowner should know – how to find the mains for water and electricity. The last thing you want is to have a plumbing accident, and you don’t know where to turn off the water supply. That is comparable to knowing how to unclog a drain line. Both of these skills can save you from a lot of trouble.
Learning how to handle a broken pipe is the least you can do for your home. It will not only save your stuff from damage, but it will also help to keep your family and pets safe.

Preparing Your Building for Spring

3 Important Steps to Take Before Spring Arrives

Springtime flooding can wreak havoc on your Romeoville, IL, business. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to prepare your building for the inclement weather. The following are three important steps to take before spring arrives:

1. Know the Causes

It is important to understand the events that may lead to a spring flood, so you can monitor weather reports and understand the risks. In many areas, spring is a very wet season. The water can oversaturate the ground. When the ground does not absorb all the water, the excess runoff can flood nearby structures. Similarly, as snow begins to melt, the ground is often still frozen. The frozen ground cannot absorb the water, leading to a flood.

2. Make Sure Your Building is Covered

Many insurance policies will cover flooding from plumbing issues, roof leaks, etc. However, it is often necessary to purchase a separate flood policy to cover weather-related water damage. The conditions that cause many springtime floods are unlikely to be covered by a standard policy. Make sure to talk with your insurance agent about purchasing flood coverage early because many policies have a waiting period. This means your insurance may not kick in until a few weeks after you purchase it.

3. Prepare Your Building

Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the weather. However, it is possible to prepare your building for a potential flood. If your building has gutters, make sure they are clean and in good condition. Repair any roof leaks before heavy rains begin. Keep exposed pipes insulated until temperatures are consistently above freezing to prevent damage from a frozen pipe. If your building has a sump pump, make sure it is operable.
Preparation is key to preparing your business for springtime flooding. However, even the most well-prepared businesses can suffer water damage. If you need help restoring your building after a spring flood, a certified restoration company has the tools and experience to get your business back to preloss condition quickly.

Protective Containment

10/15/2019 (Permalink)

Actual job containment

With mold remediation, there are a few things that have to be done but one of the most important things is called containment.  Our technicians make a sealed off section with plastic around the area to be remediated in order to prevent mold spores from traveling to other places.  In this sealed off area the demolition and the removing of affected material begins. During the demo, mold spores will be in the air so an air scrubber is run during and after the whole process to ensure that no renegade mold spores survive.  Any affected materials are put in a sealed bag to be removed and disposed of and technicians have to be vacuumed to be sure no mold spores exit containment with them.  After the job is done, containment is broken down and disposed of properly. SERVPRO of Joliet guarantees our work so sticking to these steps helps us do the job right!

Tools for Water Detection

9/2/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Joliet knows the right tools for the job are important and understanding how to use them to dry a structure and property effectively is even more crucial.  The right tool is vital for timely mitigation and to help get the business up and running again.

Water can damage in two ways - absorption through direct contact and absorption of moisture from the air.  SERVPRO of Joliet must understand how to alter humidity and temperature levels to produce an environment favorable for drying.

Our technicians have to locate the areas affected by water and to what extent moisture has been absorbed.  To do this they can use:

Moisture Sensors - detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls
Moisture Meters - determines actual moisture content of materials
Thermohygrometers - measure temperature and relative humidity which helps calculate specific humidity, dew point and vapor pressure.

All these tools help us start the process of making it "Like it never even happened."

Black Water Facts

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

1. It Can Contain Dangerous Chemicals Environmental experts often call contaminated water that stems from flooding Category 3, or “black water.” This means the water did not come from a sterile source and may contain a variety of hazardous components, including harsh sewer and lawn chemicals that entered the water during flooding. These chemicals can make the water dangerous to touch, so calling in a flood damage and cleanup service is the safest way to have it removed. 2. It May Make You Sick Category 3 water damage can be dangerous in more than one way. For example, standing black water can grow microbes that may cause a variety of illnesses. Urine and feces may also be present, even if they are not immediately visible, so it is wise to avoid this type of water completely and wait for professional cleanup services to arrive. 3. Acting Quickly Can Be Essential Because contaminated water can become more dangerous the longer it sits, it is a good idea to call in a cleanup crew right away. This can be important even if you believe the worst of the damage has already been done. Having the water removed may reduce the chances of long-term issues with your building’s affected floors and walls and prevent mold growth, which can be difficult to treat once it takes hold.

Different Types of Water Damages

4/15/2019 (Permalink)

Tips for Thawing a Frozen Water Pipe

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

It is very important to thaw a frozen water pipe as quickly as possible, however: it is equally important to thaw the pipe correctly to avoid it from bursting and causing a flood. After locating the frozen pipe:

  • Open both the hot and cold faucet handles to help alleviate the pressure in the pipe and allow the water to escape once thawed.
  • Begin thawing the pipe closest to the faucet and work your way down which will help to ensure that the melting ice is able to escape through the faucet.
  • Several ways of thawing an exposed pipe is to use a hairdryer, heat lamp, portable space heater of hot wet towels. Never use an open flame and always remember to use the electrical devices according to safety regulations.

If the pipe has broken, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve which is usually near the water meter or the water main that enters the house. Call a licensed plumber as soon as possible to repair the broken pipe. If you feel you do not want to take a chance trying to thaw the frozen pipe, he can assist you with that also. If a water cleanup is needed, call SERVPRO of Joliet at 815-436-5735.

4 Signs of Frozen Water Pipes

12/14/2018 (Permalink)

Here we go again, another cold winter reeking havoc on your water pipes. How do you know your pipes are frozen? Below are a couple of signs to watch for:

  • Pipes will only freeze when it is cold enough outside to do so. When the temperature falls to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, it is time to take precautions to prevent vulnerable pipes from freezing.
  •  If you turn on your faucet and only a small trickle or no water at all is coming out, the water pipe leading to the faucet may be frozen.
  • For pipes that can be seen, such as those under a sink; you may be able to see frost on the exterior of the pipe before you even turn the faucet on.
  • An odd smell coming from a faucet or drain can also mean that a pipe is partially or completely blocked. The only way the odor can escape is back up in the direction of your home.

Once you suspect or know you have a frozen water pipe, it is very important to act quickly to thaw the frozen pipe before it has a chance to burst and cause extensive damage to your home. If you cannot thaw the pipe or are unaware of where the frozen pipe is located, call a licensed plumber to assist with the situation.

If a pipe should burst, call SERVPRO of Joliet at 815-436-5735 and we will send our trained SERVPRO Professionals to make it "Like it never even happened."

How to Prevent Your Pipes From Freezing

11/14/2018 (Permalink)

A water pipe burst due to no heat on while homeowner was gone and caused damage and mold through the entire house.

As temperatures plummet, the risk of your pipes freezing and bursting goes up. Burst pipes are one of the most common causes of property damage and can cause thousands of dollars in water damage according to the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety. With the costs of utilities going up these days, water and heat conservation is at the top of everyones list, however; think about the cost to repair your home if a pipe should burst.

The pipes most at risk are those located in unheated interior spaces such as basements, attics, and garages and especially pipes running through cabinets and exterior walls.

Here are some steps to take to prevent frozen pipes:

  • Installing pipe insulation (about .50 per linear foot) to vulnerable pipes.
  • Keep garage doors closed especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
  • Let the cold water drip from the faucet, even a trickle can prevent the pipe from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night.
  • If you are planning to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home no lower than 55 degrees.
  • For long term, add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces to maintain warmer temperatures. Also seal cracks to prevent drafts.

Following up on a couple of these tips could mean the difference between dollars and thousands of dollars. If you have an issue with a leaky or burst pipe, call SERVPRO of Joliet at 815-436-5735. We are there for you 24/7.  Let us make it "Like it never even happened".

Even the smallest of water leaks can cause a considerable amount of damage to your property. If left untreated, a leak can cause damage to your walls, flooring, ceiling, and cabinets and eventually lead to mold problems. Mold has the ability to grow within 48 hours. Those small leaks can also turn into a burst pipe, which then becomes a flood with major damage and costly repairs. A musty smell is also a sign of a possible water damage even if there are no visible water marks at that time.

The key is to keep an eye out for potential leaks by checking areas of your home where these leaks may occur.

  • Walls and ceilings - looking for water marks.
  • Warping or discoloration of flooring.
  • Water valves under cabinets - look for puddles or water or stains on inside cabinet floor or walls.
  • Showers with loose tiles - the walls could be damp behind the tiles.
  • Toilets - around the base or by the water valve.
  • Washer hoses - check for cracks and that the hose is secured properly.
  • Dishwasher and refrigerator water lines.
  • Outdoor water spigots.

A musty smell is also a sign of a possible water damage even if there are no visible water marks at that time.

5/14/2018 (Permalink)

Over the past several years, water damage claims have risen to become the 2nd largest most frequent insurance claims. Water damage can be costly and difficult for property owners and renters to recover from. Many people assume their insurance policy will cover water damage but there are different types of water damage, which may or may not be included in a standard insurance policy. Some of the coverage depends on the source and the amount of your coverage. Several different types are:

  • Sudden or accidental discharge
  • Sewer backup or water backup
  • Overflow
  • Flood

What ever the case may be or the coverage you may have, it is important to contact your insurance agent or broker to find out what your policy does and does not cover. • Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified party to stop the water source.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building when access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.

Frozen Pipes

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the back flow pressure between the water source and the blockage.  A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.

To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:

* Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.

* Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.

* When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.

* Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

Ice Dams

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season.  They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice.  When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roofs shingles and into the structures interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

Icicles can be an initial sign of an ice dam, according to Travellers.com.  To spot ice dams inside, “check for water stains or moisture in your attic or along the ceiling of exterior walls of your house.  Water stains or moisture may be an indication that an ice dam has formed and water has penetrated the rood membrane.”

Removing an ice dam as soon as it is found is vital to. Helping prevent damage to your property and can be done using heated cables, a roof shovel, or calcium chloride ice melted.

Flood Damage

11/12/2017 (Permalink)

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.  Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is potential for suffering flood damage.

Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, doesn't mean you won't in the future.  In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program were for policies in low-risk communities.  On average, floods cast $3 billion in annual losses in the United States.

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the United States every year than any other weather-relate disaster.

Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task.  Remember, when fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO of Joliet will help you take it back.

When Floodwaters Rise

11/12/2017 (Permalink)

If your home or business has been damaged by a severe flood, it is natural to want to get back to your property to begin the cleanup process.  However, the first rule is safety.  The FEMA website warns us to be aware of roads or bridges possibly weakened or damaged by the flood.  Flood waters are often considered "black water," meaning they may contain contaminates such as oil, gasoline, raw sewage and more - all of which may be harmful upon contact.

Electric lines are often down following a severe flood, and this can be a severe hazard.  FEMA cautions us to stay away from any downed power lines and return home only when authorities tell us it is safe.

If flood strikes your home or business, call SERVPRO of Joliet and we will make it "Like it never even happened."

Preventing Frozen Pipes

12/5/2016 (Permalink)

Frozen pipes can cause major damage

Being prepared and informed may help you to avoid the messy and often expensive issue of frozen pipes. Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the "strength" of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

Before the onset of cold weather, prevent freezing of these water supply lines and pipes by following these recommendations:

  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
  • Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
  • Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
  • When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

Hopefully taking these preventative measures will help you get through the winter without any frozen pipes.  If you should find yourself with a water issue from a broken, frozen pipe, know that SERVPRO of Joliet is standing by to assist you in your time of need.

Being Prepared for Possible Water Damage

9/20/2016 (Permalink)

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters.  Conditions that cause floods include heavy or steady rain for several hours or days that saturates the ground.  This is especially true when the ground is still frozen or too dry.  Flash floods can occur in the country or city, where runoff from buildings, parking lots and streets can overwhelm municipal storm water sewers. Fortunately, you can help prevent the water damage that floods can cause your home.  Here are several flood control fixes you can make to help manage storm water runoff and prevent flood damage to your home:

  1. Slope soil away from your home's foundation.

  2. Clean out gutters and downspouts in the fall and spring.  You can also use downspout extensions to carry water farther away from your foundation.

  3. Plug holes or cracks in you gutters, downspouts and downspout extensions.

  4. Set up a downspout to empty into a rain barrel.

  5. Look for holes or cracks in your foundation and completely fill them.

  6. If your home is prone to flooding, having a sump pump installed is the most convenient flood control.

  7. Review with all family members how to shut off utilities in an emergency.

You will be better prepared to withstand a flood, or any disaster, if you have an emergency plan in place.  Plan and practice an evacuation route and have an emergency kit packed and ready to go.
